Since 2009 I have been working in the leisure, travel and tourism industry in Europe. The internet and nowadays the Social Media are changing these industries rapidly.

For tour operators the importance of, and costs for online advertising are constantly increasing and forming a threat to their business model. They will need more margin and more “special offers”.

Same time, campsites, hotels and holiday home owners are more able to communicate directly towards their (potential) guests on Social Media and using other online solutions like mailings and display advertising.

These two trends make it important and interesting to start focussing on direct bookings and become less dependent on the bookings made by partners, especially those who also offer the competitors businesses nearby!

On the beautiful wine estate at the foot of Mount Etna there are 8 luxury holiday homes.

In 2016 the collaboration started with the target to generate more direct bookings. Through online advertising with AdWords on only the highly relevant keyword combinations in combination with display advertisement.

Also Social Media profiling and advertising and support on Google products like Google Analytics, WebMasters and the My Business profile were used to serve and enhance the online community.

As a result, there were 50% more direct bookings made in 2017 compared to 2016. The facebook community grow with 400% to 1.200 likes and also Belgium has been opened as a market.
